There are educational programs, current events discussion classes, film screenings, group trips to cultural events and institutions, dance and exercise classes and health management services. Arts and crafts, bridge, line and folk dancing are other popular activities. We even offer computer classes. RSS welcomes all and reflects the vital character of the wonderful, active senior population of the Northwest Bronx

SOCIAL SERVICES

Now that I’m retired, I have lots of questions about my Social Security benefits, Medicare, long-term care options and other entitlements. Can you help?

Yes! Our professional social worker is here to help you with health insurance problems, applications to government programs, landlord, utility, legal and home care issues. She can refer you to community service providers.

What kinds of benefits or entitlements could I qualify for?

You could qualify and apply for: Food Stamps, Medicaid, HEAP, SCRIE, DRIE, LIFELINE, SAFE LINK, Access-a-Ride, EPIC, and the Medicare Savings Program. We also offer tax assistance that operates during the tax preparation season (January through April of each year).

I need housing assistance. What kinds of housing assistance do you offer? Can you find me an apartment?

Our social worker can assist you with filling out housing applications, provide tenant landlord advocacy, and assist you with applying for SCRIE or DRIE. The social worker can give you information on your housing rights and provide you with a listing of senior housing complexes. However, RSS does not rent apartments

My family member moved in with me and is stealing all my money. What can I do?

This is abuse. Our social worker can discuss a plan of action with you at your home, at RSS, or over the phone. If you do not have money for food, RSS can provide you with take-home meals.

I recently lost a family member and I feel very depressed. How can the center help me?

RSS can help you by providing a case worker who can screen for depression and a clinical social worker who can provide individual counseling, and enroll you in a bereavement group.

FOR CAREGIVERS

I am not a senior, but I am responsible for the care of one. I am overwhelmed. Can you help?

RSS eases the burdens of caregivers with support groups, individual counseling, and referrals to valuable community resources. Navigating the elder care maze on your own can be time consuming, complicated and sometimes overwhelming. Our caregiver support specialist can be your partner in planning, accessing, coordinating and monitoring all the support services you and your loved one need to live safely and independently at home.

VOLUNTEERING / EDUCATION

I am an undergraduate/graduate student in search of an internship/externship. Who should I contact?

RSS provides internship and externship experience in connection with various educational institutions for qualified social work and nursing students in training. We also accept students from a variety of other disciplines including physical therapy, occupational therapy, art therapy, music therapy, and mental health counseling. Please contact your school’s field placement office. Contact rss@riverdalesenior.org for more information.

Can I share my skills and talents with others at Riverdale Senior Services?

Absolutely! RSS relies on volunteers to make it the special place that it is. Volunteers teach classes, help the staff in the office or the kitchen, serve on various committees, participate in intergenerational programs or assist frailer members at the center and those who participate in the Adult Day Activities Program (ADAP).  In addition our Board of Directors is entirely composed of volunteers who are dedicated community members.
